ASvis workshop on “Fishing and Protected Species: Study Approaches for Sustainable Marine Ecosystem Management”, Department of Biosciences, Biotechnology and Environment, University of Bari Aldo Moro, Bari.

On May 15th, 2026, a workshop dedicated to sustainable fisheries and marine ecosystem protection will take place at the Aula Magna of the Department of Biosciences, Biotechnology and Environment at the University of Bari Aldo Moro, in Bari. The event—titled “Fishing and Protected Species: Study Approaches for Sustainable Marine Ecosystem Management”—is promoted by ASvis (Italian Alliance for the Sustainable Development) and is part of a broader initiative aimed at strengthening scientific research and innovation in the management of vulnerable and endangered marine species. The program will open with remarks by Professor Roberto Carlucci, Dr. Giulia Cipriano and Dr. Pasquale Ricci. For the event, feature contributions from leading experts will be presented: Carlotta Mazzoldi of the University of Padua, who will discuss conservation strategies for elasmobranchs in the Adriatic Sea. Pierluigi Carbonara of Coispa Technology and Research, will present an inside on blue shark bycatch mitigation in the South Adriatic Sea. A central focus of the workshop will be the LIFE PROMETHEUS project, presented by Emanuela Fanelli from the Polytechnic University of Marche and coordinator of the project. Co-founded by the European Union, the project aims to improve the conservation status of sharks and rays in the Mediterranean Sea through an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, combining field monitoring, data collection and analysis with the testing of innovative mitigation measures to reduce bycatch, one of the main threats for vulnerable shark and ray species. By actively involving fishers, stakeholders and policymakers, LIFE PROMETHEUS seeks to bridge the gap between scientific research and real-world applications, promoting more selective fishing practices and supporting evidence-based management strategies. Completing the program, Giorgia Corazzola of CoNISMa- University of Padua, will present a diagnostic framework in post-mortem investigation for the assessment of dolphin–fishery interactions. Open to the public upon previous registration and available via live streaming (https://unipd.zoom.us/j/8149047284? omn=81966038531), the workshop represents an important opportunity to connect science, policy and citizens, highlighting how collaborative initiatives such as LIFE PROMETHEUS can translate research into concrete actions for the protection and sustainable management of marine ecosystems.
