DATE: 07/10/2025

On 7 October 2025, Angelos Pechlivanis (MER) attended the International Conference on Marine Bioinvasions XII in Madeira, where he delivered a presentation titled “Marine Protected Areas under invasion: The Eastern Mediterranean as a laboratory for monitoring and management.” The talk highlighted Cyprus as a frontline “sentinel” for tracking non-indigenous species (NIS), presenting case studies that documented NIS patterns in Marine Protected Areas, evaluated community-based removal actions, and introduced novel gear designed for MPA monitoring and management. Angelos also outlined upcoming actions linked to the promotion of consumption of invasive species and activities planned within the LIFE PROMETHEUS framework, emphasising the integration of adaptive monitoring, purpose-built tools, and citizen-driven engagement to strengthen regional responses to bioinvasion pressure.
